The
MacDuffie
School
By 1941, the MacDuffie School had cultivated more than one hundred advanced women who were dedicated in the field of Medicine, Science, Teaching and even Politics.  They made significant contributions to the local, and even the whole American, development. Since the MacDuffies were advanced in years, they hired Dr. Ralph Rutenber, who graduated from the Princeton University, and his wife to manage The MacDuffie School.  The MacDuffieSchool now had it’s second generation of managers. Dr. Ralph Rutenberwas keen on education and he appreciated the contribution the MacDuffies had made to local education. After taking over the management of the MacDuffie School, Dr. Ralph Rutenber put forward the idea of “fostering, with more scientific ways, the women of new era” and further improved the teaching and managing structure; adding new courses such as preliminary and advanced mathematics and Latin Literature and enriched the curriculum in a more reasonable manner. What’s more, he hired famous professors from Mount Holyoke College and MIT as guest lecturers in order to broaden the student’s scope of knowledge and their horizons. In addition, he encouraged students to establish clubs. Under his leadership, the clubs in the MacDuffie School sprang up with the establishment of French, Drama, Chess, Physics and Dancing clubs, which enriched the students’ extracurricular life. These educational ideasallowed The MaDuffie School to gain further recognition in society.
The number of students in the MacDuffie School increased from 30 to 360 by 1972, when Dr. Rutenber retired. The public evaluation of the MacDuffie School was very high. In memory of the extraordinary contribution made by the MacDuffies, the wing building was named as the Rutenber Hall. Today when we get into the campus of the MacDuffie School, RutenberHall after removal is still standing there.
In 1990, the MacDuffie School had been established for one hundred years, fostering elite women generation after generation for the local education and society. The success of the MacDuffie’s education meant that the celebrities in the region not only wanted to send their daughters to the MacDuffie School, but also their sons. In the second half of the nineteenth century, single-sex schools in America and Britain were transforminginto the mixed schoolsat a rapid pace. For example, the University of Westminster in Britain changed into the mixed school at 1967 and Phillips Exeter Academy in America at 1970. At the same time, celebrities in Massachusetts urged the MacDuffie School to accept male students. To satisfy the wishes of the society and follow the trend of opening the mixed schools, the MacDuffie School announced itstransformation into a coeducationalschools at it’s centennial celebration.  In the meantime, they would strictly control the number of recruitments to make sure each student could receive the authentic education in the MacDuffie’s style. Ever since, the MacDuffie School has been taking the lead in the local education.
In 2011, an unusual tornado struck the Massachusetts, causing 3 deaths, 300 injuries and damage to thousands of people. The centennial teaching building in the MacDuffie School was also destroyed. However, owing to the appropriate command of the faculty and staff, there was no one hurt in the disaster. Even though the teaching building atMacDuffie had gone through over one hundred years, it was damaged too seriously to repair. Therefore, the school had no choice but moved to a town nearby, Granby, Massachusetts, where it is located today. Steven Griffin, the present principal was entrusted in that critical and difficult time, and he took over the management of this “brand new” elite school with a history of over one hundred years. “One hundred years of history is the priceless treasure for the school. Although we moved away from the original school site, the spirit of The MacDuffie School still existtoday. I do believe that the new journey of this school will be more glorious than ever.” he said.
